Writing
Duke has been writing stories since 1989 (4th grade). His first short story was entitled Aliens From Earth. His 4th and 5th grade English teachers encouraged his writing, and by 6th grade, he had written a dozen short stories. He continued writing throughout middle school, completing such stories as 1959 and The Kingston Image Story. When Duke entered high school, highly influenced by Jim Morrison, he began writing poetry. It was dark, abstract, and highly visual, with no rhyme or reason, and by 1999, he had completed three books of poetry (Refried Dreams, Black Love/White Lust, and The Elegance of Night).
Duke returned to writing stories in his early twenties (A Night on Sixth and The Infringement on Montgomery J. Nixon), and although his desire to write poetry had begun to wane, he published a chapbook in 2005 entitled Freedom is a Sarcastic Fist. In Spring 2008, he was student editor for the Longview College Fine Arts Publication, Shorelines, and in 2012 he joined Project Backstage to write articles on the Kansas City music scene.
